Frequently Asked Questions

What items will I need for you to prepare my taxes?

All clients are different as most clients have different financial situations. The most common items needed are:

  • Date of birth and social security numbers for all names claimed on the tax return (taxpayer, spouse, and dependents)

  • W2's

  • 1099's (401K, 403B, Interest from your bank accounts, Social Security, IRA, HSA accounts etc.)

  • Childcare costs with the Tax ID of the childcare facility (if applicable)

  • Summer and Winter property taxes; Monthly rent paid for tax year

  • If you have a dependent who is in college, the 1098-T from the College/University they attended

*The items listed are basic items. Each client may have their own financial situation and may have additional forms required to complete the return. Please disclose at the request of the appointment/drop off any changes to your tax situation from the year prior. A copy of last year's tax return is helpful for new clients

Please refer to the Tax Preparation Checklist in the FILES section of this page

How long should I keep my tax records?

Per the IRS guidelines, please keep your tax records for 4 years from the date they are filed. That includes any physical copies of your returns, 1099's, W2's, and all other documents used to prepare the return. The IRS can audit back 4 years from the date of filing on any and all returns.
As your tax preparer, I am only required to keep the completed tax return for 4 years from the date filed. I do not keep records of your items used to prepare your return such as your W2's, 1099's, etc.

I received a letter from the IRS, what should I do?

If you receive a letter via mail from the Internal Revenue Service, State, or City, contact my office. A copy of the letter will need to be sent to me (email/drop off/mail) to review the request of the IRS, State, or City. If you ever receive a phone call, email, or text message stating that someone is contacting you from the Internal Revenue Service, State, or City, please report it. The Internal Revenue Service, State, or City will always contact you via mail. Never give your personal information over the phone, email, or text.

How do I know if Moyer's Tax Service- Holt, MI is right for my needs?

I provide support for personal and small business tax needs. If you have a unique tax situation that I cannot support, I will connect you with other Tax Professionals in my network whom I trust and know can handle the more complex tax situations.

I see you moved?

We did! We are not far from our Holt location and still in the Holt school district. Even though we have a Lansing address, we still consider this the Holt area. For directions to our new place, please visit the contact me section and it will provide you driving directions. Our new address, effective 8/5/2022 will be 2705 Maritime Dr. Lansing, MI 48911. We are very excited to move in and appreciate your patience with us this past year moving to our temporary location. We will still have the drop box located at the front door of our new home, and will have a space for sit down face-to-face appointments in my new office. We look forward to sharing our new home with you next year!

We still do encourage the mailing and drop off method as much as possible with COVID-19 still lingering, but are offering the face-to-face appointments similar as we did last year, unless something changes. All of our mail will still be forward from our previous addresses that we had in case you missed the update!

Is Moyer's Tax Service open all year?

The tax "season" for me is January - April. I will have set hours during that time period for drop offs/appointments/etc. However, off of the season (May-December), I do not have set office hours. I am available via phone at any time. I do ask you allow 72 hours for a call back.

I have two very busy kids involved with sports and we tend to travel a bit off of tax season. I try my best to answer calls/texts/emails when I can. If your need is urgent, I do request you call me for the quickest reply.

I appreciate your understanding of the importance of my family time, but I am always available all year to answer questions and help when needed.

When can I start making an appointment?

I start taking appointments the 1st week of January, but do not start processing returns until 1/23/2024. This is due to the IRS limitations on accepting the E-Filed returns and assuring there are no other tax updates or changes for the tax season.
You can book your appointment right from my website, or by email/text/phone call. Please note I will always call 24 hours prior to your appointment to make confirm. If you need to cancel, I do request you cancel within 48 hours as my sit down appointment times do fill up quickly.

What is Budget Counseling?

I offer an additional service to help clients set up a home budget. This can help manage your finances to pay down debt, save for a trip, or plan for college or a big ticket item! This service is individualized for my client based on their needs. The set up is $150 to gather information about your spending habits and income, and from there, you can choose continuous support or try it on your own. I am not a licensed Financial Advisor or Planner. This is strictly coaching on helping you set up a budget that works for you and your family! Please call or text at 517-281-4559 for more information on how I can help you achieve your goals!

How do you accept payment?

You can either pay via check, money order, cash, credit card*, or Venmo. Please note your return will NOT be electronically submitted until all documents are returned, signed, and payment is made in full.
*Credit Card payments are subject to a $3.00 surcharge*

Do you have a referral program?

I do! Any client that refers a new client to me, will receive a $10 credit towards their next year return.

My dependent needs their taxes done, can you help with that?

I can! All clients who have a dependent who is a full-time student will get a discounted rate on the dependent's tax return.

I need to (change/correct) my return, can you help with that?

Yes! If I prepared your return from the previous or current year, and it needs to be changed, I do charge an Amendment Fee. Please refer to my client letter in the FILES section of this website for a fee schedule. If the correction is due to an error on my part, I will amend the return at no cost.

How can I make an appointment?

You can book your appointment right here from the website. You will need to enter your information such as your name, phone number, and preferably an email address. This will allow me to contact you 24 hours in advance of your appointment time to remind you. This is the fastest, most convenient way to book! My schedule is always updated on my available times. Please only book online if you are wanting a face-to-face appointment.

You can call/email/text as well to schedule an appointment. Please note that I am not always available right away to contact you back, so please give me 48 business hours to reply/return your call.

There may be circumstances that cause me to have to reschedule. I try my best to give you as much notice as possible. I do require a 24-hour cancelation notice from my clients to avoid a no-show fee. That fee is listed in the files section of this page. I do work with my clients on emergencies as much as I can.
